Mayan Ruins - Jasmine Lewis

We had a wonderful experience at the Xunantunich (try to say that three times in a row) Mayan ruins today. We learned many historical facts about how the Mayan ruins originated. It was very interesting to learn about the hard work that the Mayans put into building the huge structure. It is one thing to hear about the facts in a history class, but it brings whole new meaning when you are actually there to see it for yourself. Hiking up the great big building was challenging, but well worth it!

We also had a very unique experience crossing the Maya River today. We boarded a ferry with the vans, and the Belizeans moved the ferry across to the other side. We had the opportunity to meet many people around local shops.

A memorable experience was the three hour van ride to Independence city. I and my colleagues became very familiar with each other. We had funny conversations, and sang obnoxiously while bouncing up and down on huge speed bumps every few miles.

The team is very excited about our first day of teaching in the schools tomorrow. We are prepared to pour into the lives of children as they pour into ours.
